Provenance
Velvet Foundation for the Arts (VLAF) holds a selection of works by Chaim Gross that originate directly from the research archive and scholarly holdings of Josef Vincent Lombardo, author of Chaim Gross: Sculptor (Dalton House, 1949). Lombardo’s early documentation and catalogue work remain the foundational record of Gross’s formative sculptural production and associated studies in wood, stone, and preparatory drawing.
Many works in the VLAF collection were documented during the period in which Lombardo was compiling photographic plates, plate listings, and catalogue references for the 1949 monograph. As a result, the Foundation’s Gross holdings represent not only artworks but also material connected to the earliest stage of scholarly cataloguing of the artist’s oeuvre.
VLAF acknowledges this unique scholarly lineage and maintains Lombardo’s published and unpublished research materials as part of its curatorial responsibility. Works are preserved and presented with the understanding that their historical value lies both in their artistic significance and in their association with the first author to systematically record Gross’s artistic development.
