Kurz & Allison — Battle of Chancellorsville

Date: 1889 (copyrighted 1889 by Kurz & Allison)
Medium: Multi-stone chromolithograph on heavy wove paper
Image Size: 20 7/8 x 14 3/4 in.
Sheet Size: 24 x 18 1/2 in.

Description:
Depicting the May 2–6, 1863 campaign, this work integrates dense foliage, clustered figures, and layered smoke passages to create depth across the picture plane. Tonal modeling is achieved through overlapping pigment applications rather than mechanical screening.

Under magnification, the darker modeling reveals lithographic crayon texture and distinct stone registration. The heavy sheet retains its matte surface, consistent with 19th-century chromolithographic printing methods.

The work displays:

controlled spatial layering
rich earth-tone pigment construction
visible lithographic grain
balanced registration across multiple stones
